There are clear benefits to massage after Liposuction
Massage and lymphatic drainage have clear benefits following liposuction and fat removal. Immediately following liposuction, massage and lymphatic drainage will help the body to recover actively and more efficiently. Massage is often underestimated and many surgeons and clinics do not emphasise the benefits of massage enough.
If your body undergoes a traumatic event such as a pulled or torn muscle most everyone would consider receiving deep tissue massage by a professional. It is well known that massage is promoted as part of an effective treatment plan to get a fast, effective healing response from injuries. The same principle applies after liposuction.
Areas treated for fat removal will be left initially with tonal loss and some skin laxity. The areas treated will initially feel numb and quite hard due to the nature of the procedure. Skin tone generally returns but is a gradual process and it will be some 6-12 months before the full benefit of liposuction is complete. Massaging the treated areas will speed up recovery and help the skin to contract smoothly, evenly and more effectively.
Specifically, the benefits of massage are:
- Reduces swelling
- Improves skin tone and skin contraction
- Improves circulation
- Improves excretion of toxins
- Reduces fluid retention
- Improves lymphatic drainage
- Reduces lumpiness and fibrosis
- Speeds up healing
Lymphatic massage is a specialist technique however, all massage will benefit your recovery. We even suggest undertaking massage yourself at home. Ideally your first massage should be 1-2 weeks post-op and then at least weekly for a few weeks.
The earlier you start the massage the greater the benefit. If you have stitches you should wait until these are removed before commencing lymphatic drainage. Massage carried out earlier in your recovery will benefit you more than massages carried out later.
Massage is usually more comfortable when carried out by a professional and most professionals are happy to show you a technique that you can follow at home in-between your professional sessions. Massage does not have to be deep and painful in fact a gentler technique started very early after your surgery will make your healing process more comfortable and more pleasurable.
You will have spent a considerable sum undergoing liposuction so it is worth investing just a little extra to get the best results possible form your treatment.
