Being in a sedated state means feeling relaxed, not anxious, not in pain and with no distress. This state is brought about by administering a sedative or sedatives. When administered correctly you will be in a state of conscious sedation.
This is type of sedation is often referred to as twilight sedation.
When choosing to undergo a surgical procedure whether for elective or non-elective surgery this type of sedation will allow you to be relaxed, give you the maximum amount of comfort, make time pass quickly and make the procedure a reasonable pleasant experience with the least amount of distress and anxiety.
The sedation can be given in a variety of ways that could be
- Orally – by tablet or liquid
- Injection – either intra muscularly (into a muscle) or intravenously (into a vein)
- Gas known as Entenox
How it is given will depend on how quickly it works, gas and intravenously being the quickest.
All of these methods usually give a safe controlled and qualified dose of sedation with few if any side effects. The type of sedation given and the way that it is administered will be determined by your consultant.
Before any medication is discussed you would need to discuss any allergies, medical conditions and any medication that you are currently taking, including herbal supplements.
The sedation will allow you to fall in and out of sleep easily and communicate with the team throughout the procedure. It will allow you a faster recovery so that you can return to your every day activities as quickly as possible.
You may find that you do not have much recall or remember much about your time in theatre after conscious sedation as it produces a temporary memory loss. You may not even remember your car journey home!
